Abstract

Experiences gained and lessons learned from two schemes currently underway to clean up Brazilian bays are examined. The Guanabara Bay project is a major, technology-intensive project with massive international investment. However, the Ilha Grande Bay sanitation programme is a low-tech project focussing on community needs and taking a people-centred approach to sanitation provision. The success of the Ilha Grande Bay programme and its possible replication in large-scale projects such as Guanabara Bay is discussed. (P.M.Taylor)
