Body mass index and mortality in Asian populations: Implications for obesity cut-points

Abstract

Investigators have questioned whether body mass index (BMI, kg/m 2) cut-points for obesity used in the United States and Europe are appropriate for Asian countries. A recent study examined the association between BMI and mortality in a population-based cohort of Japanese men and women. These and other results did not indicate a need for lower cut-points in Asians. © 2003 International Life Sciences Institute.
