Abstract

Background: Nursery school teachers in day care centers are exposed to various forms of stress during their work that can lead to health impairments. This study investigated which specific forms of stress have a negative impact on the mental health of childcare workers. Methods: A total of 194 female pre-school teachers aged 43.4 ± 12.5 years voluntarily participated in the study. The stress factors, the immediate stress and the burnout risk as a long-term stress consequence were recorded using questionnaires. Relults: The most frequent stress factors were many work tasks (96%), noise (95%), and many children in the group (91%). More than 80% of the pre-school teachers also had to deal with physical stress. Significant stress could be identified as due to social and organizational factors and nine teachers were at risk of burnout. Conclusion: Organizational processes should be optimized and noise reduced. This article discusses which preventive measures could be implemented to preserve the health of the pre-school teachers.
