We have analyzed nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (nd2) genes to elucidate the phylogenetic status (genetic variation) of Canary Island populations of great spotted woodpeckers (Dendrocopos major) that are on the western fringe of the distribution range. Based on these two genes, differences are found between a clade from the Canaries and the rest of the range studied. No differences were observed within the two races found on this archipelago. © Dt.
