Abstract

The partition coeffs. of some 50 org. compds. (acids, bases, and nonelectrolytes)in the solvent systems isoamyl alc./water, octyl alc./water, andoleyl alc./water were detd. and compared with those for the isobutylalc./water and ethyl ether/water systems (cf. C.A. 45, 3690d). Thepartition in one alc./water system can be calcd. approx. from thatin another such system by use of the equation log k1 = a log k2 -b, where k1 and k2 denote the partition coeffs. and a and b are consts. The "const." b is detd. by the no. of hydrophilic groups in the solute. The variation is attributed to the formation of internal H bondsbetween the solute mols. in the nonaq. phase.
