Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of the presence of a retired elderly on family health. We consider The Special Health Supplement of the National Household Sample Survey (Suplemento Especial de Saúde da PNAD-IBGE), conducted on 2008, and the retirement age rule to construct the treatment and control groups, necessary to implement the regression discontinuity design (RDD) methodology. We find evidence that having a retiree in the family improves the perception of family members about their own health conditions and their capacity to perform daily activities, in addition to reducing the incidence of a set of diseases. This positive effect can be explained, at least partially, by the extra time that retired people gain to take care of themselves and their relatives.
