Human beings are often characterized in terms of dichotomous classifications: “X or not X”. There seem to be three such classifications that were very relevant to Emmy Noether’s life. Probably the most serious was religious/ethnic ancestry: she was a Jew living in Nazi Germany, at a time when being a Jew there put one at high risk of persecution or even death
