Abstract

In mice, the anticonvulsant, motor performance-impairing, and locomotor-stimulating activities of phencyclidine (PCP) [77-10-1] and the phencylidine-like compd. LY 154045 [91706-86-4] were compared with those of the selective N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) [6384-92-5] receptor antagonists D,L-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid and D,L-2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoic acid. While all 4 compds. possessed anticonvulsant and motor performance-impairing activities, only the PCP-like compds. stimulated locomotor activity. The latter divergence in biol. response suggests that not all PCP effects can be explained by NMDA receptor antagonism. [on SciFinder(R)]
