Abstract
Considering translation as one of the most traditional forms of communication in Western culture, the purpose of this article is to point alit the importance of those concepts -literal translation, free translation- which, being antagonistic, often preside over an)' debate relative to the complex aspects of this humble activity. These concepts become a constant from which Étienne Dolet and John Dryden formulate the first theoretical approach related to the theory of translation.
