Abstract

Phytotoxins are poisonous substances produced by plant pathogens that have adverse effects on plants. As a group, phytotoxins have no common structural features, and these belong to such diverse classes of compounds as acetogenin, peptide, terpenoid, steroid, alkaloid and combination of these classes. The general features of phytotoxins isolated from plant pathogenic bacteria and fungi are briefly described. Isolation, biological activity, structure determination, synthesis, biosynthesis and utilization are mentioned on a bacterial toxin, coronatine, and fungal toxins, betaenones, altiloxins, solanapyrones and alboatrin in rather detail. © 1987, The Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.
