Abstract
Despite increasing pressure for, and general trends towards, greater workplace inclusivity, gender inequality remains a persistent and significant feature of the logistics labour force. As a result, an age-old reputation for dominant masculinity remains, undermining the recruitment and retention of women. Drawing on a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with managers, workers and union officials, this article interrogates the reproduction of gender inequalities in container terminal work. We examine the combined effect of embedded gendered union attitudes and employer practices in reinforcing and perpetuating workplace gender inequalities. We do this in the context of a growing literature placing logistics at the critical core of aggressive strategies of wealth generation within global supply chains.
