POLICE EDUCATION AND CITIZEN SECURITY: THE BRAZILIAN EXPERIENCES AND THE CASE OF THE RIO GRANDE DO SUL MILITARY POLICE

Abstract

The article deals with police education focused on citizen security, taking as an empirical reference the analysis of the training courses of the Military Brigade of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (BM/RS). There is a history of Brazilian innovations in police education. On the world stage, there are more and more studies on new paradigms in police education. Through a quantitative research of documentary nature, the advances and challenges in this post-redemocratization field were studied, as well as the analysis of the programs and disciplines of the training courses for entering the corporation and the percentages of hours per course in the sub-areas of social sciences, professional development, public management, technologies police, legal studies, internships and complementary activities, seeking to identify advances that provide citizen and participatory training to public security professionals. The results point to advances with the expansion of the list of humanistic disciplines and a greater focus on citizen security.
