Abstract

The well-known detail-preserving anisotropic diffusion (DPAD) for smoothing speckle noise in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images suffers from poor despeckling performance near edges and serious blocking artefacts in homogeneous regions. The DPAD is extended to effectively alleviate the aforementioned problems by embedding the mean curvature motion controlled by an adaptive coupling function into the DPAD's diffusion equation. © 2014 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
