Abstract

The objective of this work was to determine the general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of hard yellow corn (Zea mays L.) in the district of La Molina in the 2004 campaign. The eleven inbreeding lines from the International Corn and Wheat Center CIMMYT were selected with a tester of narrow genetic foundation. The characteristics studied were grain yield, plant height, corncob height and days of male flowering. The experimental design was 8x8 triple. The genetic material was constituted by 52 simple hybrids, six experimental double hybrids and six commercial hybrids. The analysis of the GCA and SCA was carried out with 36 simple hybrids product of nine lines, the method IV of Griffing, model I, was applied, analyzing only the direct crosses. The crossings 7x2, 7x18 y 7x22 showed major grain yield. The GCA and SCA were significant for all the studied characteristics, predominating the GCA. Line seven expressed the highest GCA for grain yield, as well, this line when combined with other lines of low GCA expressed the best grain yield. The highest SCA was present in the crossings 9x18, 9x12 y 7x2.
