A non-porphyrinic, mononuclear oxomanganese(IV) complex was generated at room temperature and characterized by spectroscopic methods. The MnIV = O adduct is capable of activating C–H bonds by a H-atom transfer mechanism and is more reactive in this regard than most MnIV = O species. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
