Abstract
A person’s genetic make-up, including their ethnicity, can affect how they respond to a drug. It can also contribute to drug toxicity and efficacy. Pharmacogenomic testing is now inexpensive, relatively fast and can enhance patient care. Pre-emptive tests for azathioprine and abacavir are subsidised by Medicare. A national regulatory system including standardised reporting and guidelines for interpreting test results is urgently needed. Improved education for GPs and pharmacists at postgraduate and undergraduate levels is also needed.
