Abstract
Propulsion systems of modern road vehicles include several subsystems for energy conversion and storage. Such complex systems cannot be optimized for performance, fuel economy, and cost using "trial-and-error" approaches. Systematic optimizations must be performed using mathematical models that approximate the system's behavior on the appropriate precision level. This survey paper describes some of the most useful general ideas in this field and shows three examples of their application. Copyright © 2007, Institut français du pétrole.
