Abstract
New diatom, silicoflagellate, and radiolarian zonations are used in a micropalaeontologic study of Miocene-Holocene sediments from Ross Sea Site 273 (western Ross Sea), Site 272 (eastern Ross Sea) and Site 274 (Ross Sea continental rise). Extremely high sediment accumulation rates (over 150 m/Ma) and the sedimentology and micropalaeontology of these sites are indicative of an open Ross Sea (no large ice shelves) with sedimentation dominated by rapidly calving, debris-laden outlet glaciers. By 16 Ma ago small ice shelves began forming along the western margin of the Ross Sea. The Ross Sea regional disconformity represents a minimum of 10 Ma. A major increase in sand size ice-rafted detritus (IRD) and the initial occurrence of dropstones in Core 12 suggests Ross Ice Shelf formation by 10.0 to 8.5 Ma. Initial formation of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) must have, therefore, occurred after 10 Ma. -from Authors
