This study used a qualitative approach with ethnographic communication methods, participant observation techniques, and in-depth interviews with 20 children and traditional leaders. Data were collected through audiovisual recordings of children's interactions during traditional rituals, field notes, and interviews. Data analysis was conducted using Searle's (1969) pragmatic theory framework. The results showed that children were able to identify and interpret various language functions in traditional rituals, such as declarative, expressive, and directive functions. Other findings revealed a scaffolding process by adults in facilitating children's understanding of the pragmatic aspects of ritual language. This study contributes to an in-depth understanding of the role of traditional rituals in the pragmatic development of early childhood and highlights the importance of preserving local wisdom as a rich source of language learning. Practical implications of this study include recommendations for integrating elements of traditional rituals into early childhood education curricula to support the development of their pragmatic competence.
