Abstract
This paper presents a conceptual review about runoff generation processes and hydrologically sensitive areas (HSA). It is proposed to use the concept of HAS to delimitation of permanent preservation areas (PPA) due the capacity of these areas generate surface runoff by saturation establishing sediment and pollutants delivery upstream transported toward the channel. Thus, it recognizes the importance of this concept as a new paradigm in the delimitation of PPA according to the watershed's hydrogeomorphic characteristics. Finally, it was observed that studies of the relationship between HSA and PPA require further clarification in order to seek an indicator of hydrological sensitivity in the landscapes that can be uses in watershed with distinct physiographic features.
