Abstract

The impact of the break up of the state-funded system on the reform of the Italian ports and the reshaping of the Italian market is examined. Private operators are being used as catalysts for consolidation into two main port centres at Trieste and Venice and one transhipment hub on the toe of Italy. Construction and development work at these centres is described. Various issues involved in this development are discussed. Italy's two major operating interests Contship and Sinport are likely to reap the first benefits of this reform. -P.M.Taylor
