Abstract
Helicolenus barathri (Hector) is a valid species and not a junior synonym of H. percoides (Richardson) as considered by earlier authors. Both species areredescribed. They differ from other members of the genus in having low numbers of gill rakers (4–7+ 14–18) and tubed lateral line scales (27–29). H. barathri differs from H. percoides in having a larger eye (2.5-2.9 cf. 3.0-3.5 in head length). © 1989 Journal of the Royal Society of New Zeland.
