Abstract

A novel high-pressure scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was employed to bridge the pressure gap at the ultimate resolution. It was shown that for the chosen system, H/Cu(100), the surface reconstructs into the (1×2) missing-row structure at H2 partial pressures >2 mbar and thus response identically to a reactive gas at UHV and atmospheric pressures.
