Abstract

Each construction work has its volume to be built. The use of traditional 2D methods in the breakdown and management of high-rise building construction volume has recently faced quite a few challenges; for instance, some projects construction has been prolonged or project-cost estimates are unsound due to duplicated or omitted calculation. This happens because the quantity surveyor (QS) manages the construction volume manually and relies on 2D design drawings for calculations. For this to be solved, the adoption of BIM technology in construction volume management should be an irresistible choice. BIM technology empowers the breakdown and management of work volume by automating the calculation of volumes and updating structure parameters as well as integrating design, progress and cost data into a single 3D model. This paper identifies the main factors affecting the application of BIM of high-rise building construction volume.
