Abstract

Details the underlying oceanography and mathematics necessary for the understanding and development of acoustic tomography systems. Such systems, which utilise arrays of transmitters and receivers, provide acoustic parameters which can be interpreted to reveal oceanographic properties. This book covers the forward and inverse tomography problems and provides examples of models for data interpretation. Part one provides an introduction to the tomography problem. Part two then presents information on: the sound channel; ray and mode representation; the observation of ocean currents and basin scale circulation; range-dependent, data-oriented and model-oriented forward problems; and observational methods. The epilogue then reviews the progress in oceanography that has been made due to advances in acoustic techniques. Lastly, appendix A chronicles the development of acoustic tomography, and provides and atlas of key results. -S.J.Stone
