Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a public health problem in developing countries and has become the six highest cause of death in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the relationship of physical activity and central obesity with T2DM. This was a case-control study, with a sample of 25 patients with T2DM in the Internist Polyclinic Dustira Hospital in Cimahi. The independent variables examined were gender, physical activity and central obesity, while the dependent variable was T2DM. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and odds ratios of the magnitude of the risk factor were calculated. Gender did not have a significant influence on the occurrence of T2DM (p-value = 0.40; OR = 0.5; 95% CI = 0.15-1.71). Physical activity did have a statistically significant relationship with the occurrence of T2DM (p-value = 0.0001; OR = 16.6; 95% CI = 4.04–68.04). Central obesity was also a risk factor for the occurrence of T2DM (p-value = 0.001; OR = 10.3; 95% CI = 2.77–38.21). We can conclude that the occurrence of T2DM is influenced by lifestyle factors such as low physical activity and central obesity. Keywords: T2DM, physical activity, central obesity
