Abstract
The salinity of irrigation water is closely related with the salinity of soils. Consequently it has an influence on the cultivable land and stability of crops and yields in the coastal valleys in northern Chile. The salinity conditions are increasing, causing a marked salt accumulation effect in the lower part of the valley conversely, the lower salinity contents in irrigation water in Azapa valley, allows a large range of crops with high yields in contrast to Lluta valley. This problematical situation, without any doubt, will have far-reaching effects in the development of agriculture in north of Chile. The objective of the research will focus in the characterization of these elements.
