Abstract

Concern about the consequences for the world's resources of ever-increasing industrial activity is not new. However, these concerns have now escalated, creating unexpected and disturbing level of public outcry. The underlying message is clear: that business itself is bad, and that big business is even worse. How the chemical industry responds to public concern about sustainable development is discussed.
