Abstract

This article aims to describe business risks the street vendors have been struggled with in their informal economic activities in contemporary urban Indonesia; as well as their strategies to overcome the risks. Drawing from ethnographic study I conducted among hawkers at Pasar Jumat (Friday flea market) Asy-Syiraj in Bandung, there were four business risks they had to struggle with, 1) local market uncertainty, 2) in-disciplined finance management, 3) unpredicted yet obligatory socio-cultural events, and 4) macroeconomic uncertainty. In order to overcome the risks, they implemented some strategies such as extending labor time and rotating selling place in the city.
