Abstract

A series of 37 children with transposition of the great arteries have undergone Mustard's operation. 33 of these had simple transposition of the great arteries and 4 were complicated. All but 2 had had some previous palliative procedures. 10 patients died before discharge from hospital and there were 2 late deaths, 1 after 3 mth and the other after 8 mth. Bleeding, dysrhythmia, and hypotension were common immediate postoperative complications, while recurrent heart failure and persistent atrioventricular block occurred in 5 and 4 patients respectively.
