The incidence of 30 minor congenital malformations was examined in 1000 apparently normal newborn infants of known gestational age and birth weight. The frequency of minor defects was significantly higher in small for date babies than in true premature and full term neonates. The results support the idea that the detection of multiple minor anomalies may alert the physician to the existence of hidden major abnormalities.
