Abstract
A mathematical model implemented in a spreadsheet environment is presented for a soccer ball in flight. The simulation is used as part of a project designed to introduce students to basic concepts in the field of flight mechanics. Results are presented for a free kick under various conditions and are consistent to previous studies and to the physical principles governing soccer ball motion in the air. It is concluded that a relatively simple model can be used in order to simulate key aspects of a game of great popularity thus providing students with increased motivation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
