Epidemiological profile of patients with COVID-19 in shelters in Ciudad del Este during the start of the Paraguayan pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: One of the main components of the initial strategy of the health authorities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic was the provision of quarantine sites where migrant compatriots would receive clinical and virological monitoring before entering the country. Objetivo: Describir el perfil epidemiológico y clínico de pacientes con COVID-19 de albergues de Ciudad del Este durante el periodo inicial de la pandemia en Paraguay. Objective: Describe the epidemiological and clinical profile of patients with COVID-19 from shelters in Ciudad del Este during the initial period of the pandemic in Paraguay. Metodología: Estudio transversal, en pacientes de nueve albergues de aislamiento por COVID-19. Se incluyeron datos demográficos, y clínicos consignados en fichas de individuos con diagnóstico confirmado. Resultados: La muestra consistió en 300 individuos (264 adultos) con una edad promedio de 24,6±8 años. Se consignan las ciudades de procedencia y los destinos según referencia de domicilio. Se detallan también las características clínicas (61,3 formas leves y 38,7% asintomáticos). Se analizaron las diferencias según género y grupos etarios. Conclusión: Este trabajo analiza lo que podría considerarse el primer contingente de individuos con COVID-19 que ha ingresado al Paraguay. El trazado demográfico y las características clínicas no pintan formas severas debido a la escasa comorbilidad encontrada en la muestra. The cities of origin and destinations are entered according to the address reference. The clinical characteristics are also detailed (61.3 mild forms and 38.7% asymptomatic). Differences according to gender and age groups were analyzed. Conclusion: This work analyzes what could be considered the first contingent of individuals with COVID-19 to have entered Paraguay. The demographic trace and the clinical characteristics do not depict severe forms due to the scarce comorbidity found in the sample.
