Abstract

About 341 (average age of 38.0 ± 2.5 years) patients withperiodontal disease were included in this study. All the patientswere not treated for periodontal disease for a period of6 months prior to this study. All the patients were not on anyhormonal therapy. Antibodies to Porphyromonas gingivalis(P. gingivalis) were determined in blood serum by enzyme-linkedimmunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Findings from this studysuggest immune response to P. gingivalis is more effective inmales than in females. Smoking and obesity tends to reduceeffective immune response.
