Abstract
La diabetes mellitus (DM) es un desorden metabólico de múltiples etiologías, caracterizado por hiperglucemia crónica con disturbios en el metabolismo de los carbohidratos, grasas y proteínas como resultado de defectos en la secreción y/o en la acción de la insulina. Se realizó un estudio de caso en la Asociación Salvadoreña de Diabetes ASADI, con el objetivo de describir las percepciones, creencias y prácticas alrededor del diagnóstico y los tratamientos de las personas con diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Método: consistió en realizar un enfoque cualitativo de corte descriptivo, se seleccionó una muestra por conveniencia, se dirigieron dos grupos focales conformados por siete y ocho personas, hombres y mujeres de 35 a 75 años, con más de un año de pertenecer a la asociación y padecer la enfermedad, ser pacientes en control médico, participar en el grupo terapéutico y residir en San Salvador. Se administró una guía de preguntas a los grupos focales y a los cuidadores de los pacientes, entrevistas semiestructuradas al médico especialista y al educador en diabetes. Se solicitó consentimiento informado a ASADI y a las personas participantes en las entrevistas. Los datos fueron vaciados en un libro de códigos y analizados cada objetivo específico de la investigación. Se concluye que las percepciones, creencias y prácticas desfavorables se reducen con la educación, y la misma ayuda a tener una vida más larga y tranquila que además fomenta el autocuidado y mejora la salud.Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins as a result of defects in the secretion and/or action of insulin. A case study was conducted in the Salvadoran Diabetes Association ASADI, with the objective of describing the perceptions, beliefs and practices surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: it consisted of a descriptive qualitative approach, a sample was selected by convenience, two focus groups were conducted with seven and eight people, men and women between 35 and 75 years old, with more than one year of belonging to the association and suffering from the disease, being patients under medical control, participating in the therapeutic group and residing in San Salvador. A guide of questions was administered to the focal groups and to the patients’ caregivers, semi-structured interviews with the specialist physician and the diabetes educator. Informed consent was requested from ASADI and the people participating in the interviews. The data were entered in a code book and analyzed for each specific objective of the research. It is concluded that unfavorable perceptions, beliefs and practices are reduced with education, and education helps to have a longer and calmer life that also promotes self-care and improves health.
