Agronomic traits, production components and grain yield of corn hybrids (Zea mays)

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic traits, production components and grain yield of corn hybrids in Lambayeque region and determine those of similar or greater behavior to two commercial hybrids of the area. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with 23 treatments and four replications. Each plot consisted of five rows of 4.9 m separated to 0.75 m, with two plants every 0.35 m. The variables evaluated were: grain yield (t ha-1), plant height, ear height, male and female flowering, prolificacy index, ear length and diameter, number of rows, number of grains per row, ear and grain weight and thousand grain weight. The hybrids that showed the best yield were CLYN240×CML451Q, CLYN240×CLO2720, CLRYNO44×CML297, CLRYNO44×CLO2450, CLYN205×CLYN240, CLRYNO17×CLO2450, CML161×CLYN240, CLO2450×CML287, CLO2450×CML297, CLYN240×CML287, CLQRCY49×CLO2450, CLRYNO17×CML287, CML297×CML161, similar to INIA619 and higher than INIA605. One of the hybrids with best traits was CLYN240×CML451Q had the best grain yield, a ear height/plant height ratio of 0,51, largest number of ear rows and one of the highest values in ear length, ear weight and grain weight.
