Deficiency symptoms in cacao seedlings observed in pot experiments with the Bouma-Janssen method.

Abstract

The Bouma-Janssen pot experiment method with a double pot technique [see HCA 45, 11] was used to demonstrate deficiency symptoms in tropical perennial crops, using cacao as the test plant, with purified sand and with a volcanic ash subsoil from Ecuador. The deficiency symptoms observed generally agreed well with those described by other workers, but they appeared at a much earlier stage than reported in experiments with conventional sand or water cultures. Sickle leaf has usually been related to Zn deficiency, but other nutrient disorders may also produce sickle leaf, as with B deficiency in the present study.
