Abstract
Hemodialysis is a nonselective mass exchange process which replaces only part of the excretory functions of the natural kidney and none of its many biochemical functions. The morbidity and mortality of hemodialysis therapy are closely related to the quality of treatment. Important variables are frequency and length of treatment, control of the technical aspects of dialysis, and dietary management. Various quantitative approaches to optimizing dialysis therapy have been proposed. The approaches are compared and contrasted with regard to their effect on patient well-being.
