Abstract
The history of the term "phenomenology" is discussed; the term is rich in meaning and has varied depending on its temporal and spatial context. One common contemporary usage in modern psychiatry is to refer to the signs and symptoms in mental illness. Research strategies for studying schizophrenia are also discussed. © 1991 Oxford University Press.
