Abstract

The objective of this work was to characterize the biopolymer obtained from Andiroba oil (Carapa guianensis Aublet) by heating in the presence of oxygen without any additional treatment, by FTIR infrared absorption spectroscopy and X Ray diffraction. Infrared spectra showed changes in the absorption bands at 1300 to 1000 cm-1 for d(CO), 1712 at 1745 cm-1 (C=O), and disappearance of the absorption band at 721 cm-1 assigned to out-of-plane deformations of groups ds/t (C-H) and at 3005 cm-1 for the axial deformation band of n (H-C=), it being possible that these changes are due to the progressive increase in the degree of polymerization of the oil due to increased cross-links and systematic decrease of the double bonds. Through the diffractogram of the polymer obtained by X-Ray diffraction, it was possible to characterize it as an amorphous solid, a characteristic state of polymeric materials under the experimental conditions used.
