An evaluation of a community leadership training programme in Soweto

Abstract

The article describes a partnership initiative between the Department of Social Work of the University of Johannesburg and a non-governmental organisation, the African Self-Help Association (ASHA), situated in Soweto. The purpose of the partnership was to help ASHA transform its preschool centres into 40 one-stop community centres through a community leadership training programme, within the context of the developmental welfare policy of South Africa. The results of the training programme showed that, amongst other aspects, the programme contributed to a participatory management style, personal and professional skills, and the establishment of projects in the community.
