Dyspareunia is a common gynaecological symptom and its proper management demands a subtle and delicate approach. In the past gynaecologists have been too ready to diagnose a physical cause while sex therapists have tended to ascribe a psychological origin. In reality there is usually a combination of physical and psychological factors and treatment needs to be directed at both.
