Abstract
Breast milk is a dynamic biofluid that fulfills the nutritional requirements of neonates, influencing the growth, development, and physiological processes of the infant. The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics advocate exclusive breastfeeding during the initial six months of an infant's life, followed by the introduction of complementary foods, with breastfeeding ideally sustained for up to two years. Furthermore, breastfeeding confers various positive effects on the health of both the mother and the infant. Breast milk is recognized for its protective role against diverse infections in neonates, a reduction in the occurrence of sudden infant death syndrome, and a decreased susceptibility to chronic diseases such as allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, and Crohn's disease throughout childhood and into adulthood. Immediate advantages for lactating women include facilitated postpartum weight loss and a decreased risk of postpartum depression, hemorrhage, and infection when in contrast to their non-breastfeeding counterparts. In the long term, the benefits extend to a reduced risk of chronic diseases, including breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers, as well as osteoporosis and diabetes. In light of breast milk's status as a salubrious, readily accessible, costeffective, and multifaceted nutritional source for both neonates and mothers, it is imperative to actively promote, support, and encourage breastfeeding practices among mothers.
