Analysis of interference in a double interchange heterozygote of wheat (Triticum aestivum l.)

Abstract

A cytological analysis of meiotic configurations in a double interchange heterozygote in common wheat, Triticum aestivum L., involving 3DL/4DS and 1AL/UN (unidentified) chromosomes is presented, where pollen mother cells were stained with Giemsa. The translocations were identified by C-banding and this staining procedure located the positions of chiasmata in meiotic configurations in both translocation complexes. A strong interference was found between the presence of chiasmata in the interstitial and neighbouring translocated segments. If a chiasma is present in the former, it excludes the simultaneous presence of one in the latter and vice versa. It was also observed that the simultaneous presence of chiasmata in both distal segments of a translocation quadrivalent is more frequent than other situations.
