Abstract

In Indonesia, we currently see the increasing participation of citizens in several legislative elections. In 2009, the political participation rate in the legislative elections was 79%, 75.11% in 2014, which then increased to 81.69% in 2019. This phenomenon raises the question of what factors influence the trend of increasing public political participation. This study aimed to determine the role of political trust, political efficacy, and candidate orientation in explaining public political participation in the 2019 legislative elections. Of the 400 participants, 50% are and 50% are female, who were selected based on cluster sampling. Designed as correlational research, the results showed that either simultaneously or partially, political trust, political efficacy, and candidate orientation played a significant role in explaining political participation. These findings practically imply that in elections, people's political participation is the key to democracy. To actualise democratic political participation, thus, both the government, legislative candidates, and political parties must pay attention to the importance of the role of political trust, political efficacy, and candidate orientation.
