Abstract

With its geographical location and its geographical features, Turkey provides a suitable environment for the growth of many agricultural products. Tobacco which is not very selective in terms of growth conditions and spreads to wide areas is very well adapted to the conditions of Turkey. Tobacco continues to be an important agricultural product for Turkey with its contribution to the country's economy and the employment opportunities it provides, with discussing the damages to human health day by day. In recent years there have been radical changes in tobacco and tobacco products. Especially with the legislation enacted in 2002, serious reductions in tobacco farming have been observed. As a result, Turkey, which has a significant place in world production with Oriental tobaccos, has lost this position and in the year of 2014 it was 16th with 74,696 tons of production. In this study, the tobacco sector in Turkey was evaluated in general terms, the policies affecting tobacco agriculture were examined, the history of tobacco agriculture and the geographical distribution of tobacco in province and district basis in the selected years were examined in order to reveal the causes of this retardation and the current stage of tobacco agriculture.
