RACISM AGAINST INDIGENOUS PEOPLES: AN OVERVIEW OF CASES IN BRAZILIAN CITIES BETWEEN 2003 AND 2019

Abstract

There are several analyses of racism in Brazilian society, only a few of which show how it affects the Indigenous peoples. This article provides an overview of the episodes described in the Reports on violence against Indigenous peoples, which compiles cases in all of Brazil since 2003. After reading and systematizing almost three hundred reported events, it was possible to confirm that this phenomenon is widespread throughout the country, with cases in nearly every one of the States and the Federal District. Racism against indigenous peoples manifests in different patterns, as revealed by the sociodemographic profile of cities with cases of racism and the explanation for some episodes. Regardless of the different contexts, racism excludes the Indigenous presence in Brazilian cities.
