Abstract

The power consumption of sewage treatment plants is dependent on a number of local conditions. Using several case examples, the authors discuss the influence of treatment-plant size, treatment requirements, the process concept of sewage and sludge treatment as well as the efficiency of the technical equipment on power consumption. Theoretical considerations are compared with real data from various benchmark projects. It is shown that the size of a plant has the greatest impact on its specific energy consumption. Some influence on the energy-consumption level comes from the treatment efficiency, but this factor is not dominant. Energy-optimised treatment plants of more than 50,000 p. e. can achieve very satisfactory clarification including nitrogen and phosphorus elimination with an external electric power of 0 to 2 W per p. e. It has proved possible to design and run large sewage treatment plants in a way as to avoid, on a yearly average, the need for an external power supply. © Springer-Verlag.
