Abstract

The bioorganometallic chemistry has recently emerged as a subdiscipline of organometallic chemistry at the interface with biology. This chapter gives an overview of various bioorganometallic compounds in a biological context. It covers the enzymes and the cofactors that are organometallic in which it focuses on the biological properties of metal complexes with at least one metal-carbon bond. Naturally occurring bioorganometallic complexes, such as vitamin B12, nitrogenases, and biological redox mediators, are discussed. Therefore, the reader will get a balanced view of this rapidly growing and promising field.
