Abstract

Earlier nomenclators and major systematic reviews of the hummingbirds, including J. L. Peters's standard "Check-list of Birds of the World," cite the subgeneric (or generic) name Melanotrochilus Deslongchamps (more properly Eudes-Deslongchamps) from the Guide du Naturaliste, 2:7, 1880. Actually the name, with its diagnosis, was first published by the same author in the Bulletin de la Societe Linneenne de Normandie, ser, 3, vol. 3, p. 314, 1879. Although this was correctly indicated by Neave (Nomenclator Zoologicus, 3: 90, 1940), it seems not to have been recorded in the ornithological literature. The article in which the name was proposed, or parts thereof, was subsequently published at least 4 times, which has added to the confusion. ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Author
